Thoughts on Chris Strausser news...

This one is a little more surprising than Jeff Choate to Montana State and more recently Bush Hamdan to the Falcons. Strausser is well liked by those he has worked with and recruited against, but he's never been the most notable recruiter for Washington and while it was always an uphill battle, losing 5-star OT Foster Sarell to Stanford didn't help.

The Broncos will likely announce the hire either Sunday or Monday with UW beginning the process to find his replacement right away. One name to watch is Boise State OL coach and co-offensive coordinator Scott Huff, who coached under Petersen as the BSU OL coach from 2007-09 and TE's from 2010-13 plus 2006.

Strausser held the title of Associate Head Coach and OL coach, with the former being mainly for salary purposes and in the case of Huff it would allow him to get a raise with Lubick/Smith both being Co-OC's. Huff could also add Hamdan's title of passing game coordinator, but associate HC is more likely. Other names are being considered but that's the name I would watch most moving forward.

UPDATE [4:21 p.m. Sunday]: From what I've been able to gather the Husky assistants were all on vacation last week, including defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski taking some time to recover from a shoulder replacement. Around that time is when the Broncos came calling to approach UW OL coach Chris Strausser with the offer and sources I've spoken with said the hire/departure is expected to be confirmed Monday morning.

Petersen isn't expected to take long to find his replacement either, with Arizona OL coach Jim Michalczik and Boise State co-offensive coordinator / OL coach Scott Huff has top candidates. I believe Petersen will choose Huff due to their extensive history at Boise and having a younger coach that will have more energy in recruiting playing key factors.

Spoke with 2018 4-Star OT Dawson Jaramillo...

I was able to talk with 2018 four-star Lake Oswego (Ore.) offensive tackle Dawson Jaramillo on Saturday night following the reports of Strausser to Denver. Overall the loss of Strausser isn't detrimental, but UW coach Chris Petersen will have to make a decision rather quickly to not lose a step on the recruiting trail.

Jaramillo on Strausser departure: "I'm disappointed, because I really liked him. But I don't blame him, if he wants to go to the highest level that's good for him. I was surprised. I thought with the success Washington's been having he'd ride with it instead of going to a mediocre NFL team. I'm a packers fan so it doesn't affect me. But I could have seen myself playing for him and now I don't get that opportunity. But hey that's how football is, he's done well and he's in high demand."

Jaramillo on UW interest w/o Strausser: "I definitely want to know who they'll hire. But I know that coach Petersen is highly respected and I think a lot of people would love to coach for him so I know he'll get a great coach. I respect coach Pete and it would be amazing to be around him, but ultimately my position coach will be the person I spend a lot more time with. I think it's better for it to happen now then for me to potentially go there excited to play for him and he leaves before i could play for him. Like the the class they just signed."

Quick Note on 2018 4-star WR Chase Williams...

I spoke with 2018 four-star WR Chase Williams this morning and he said he heard of the Matt Lubick hire late last night, but said his interest in Washington hasn't changed with the hire and loss of Bush Hamdan. Despite coaching at Oregon, Ole Miss and Baylor in the past three months Williams said he hasn't gotten the chance to talk to Lubick, but he is looking forward to meeting the new receivers coach.

Williams is still planning on visiting Washington April 19th or April 29th and he will certainly get a chance to meet with Lubick then. I still expect UW to land Williams along with Austin Osborne and Melquise Spiker for the class of 2018 and have them as the three receivers for this year.

Thoughts from the weekend...

With Washington focusing on bringing in a lot of in-state prospects this weekend I've been able to talk with a decent amount of prospects from this weekend and thought I'd share some comments...

2019 Graham (Wash.) Graham-Kapowsin quarterback Dylan Morris [uncommitted]:

Morris spent the majority of his visit with UW OL coach Chris Strausser, and speaking briefly with head coach Chris Petersen and OC/QB coach Jonathan Smith. Morris said the visit went well and he enjoyed getting to talk with the coaches and he added that he feels his relationship with Strausser has gotten been with the visit.

Morris said he wants to visit WSU, Nebraska, and a few California schools this spring and summer and I think once UW hires its next passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach and get extensions sorted out they will be able to advance more with his recruitment. J.T. Daniels is Washington's other top quarterback target in the class of 2019, but Morris might have to decide between UW/Sirmon (and if UW adds a second QB in the class) and other schools which could be the key factor.

2018 three-star Sumner (Wash.) athlete Tre Weed [uncommitted]:

I found it intriguing that Weed spent essentially his entire time talking with Petersen during his visit. Weed is a rising prospect not only in-state but on the West Coast in general, however I think Washington will hold off on offering Weed due to the limited number of scholarships, no pressing need for a running back with Gaskin, McClatcher, McGrew and now Salvon Ahmed coming in there isn't a massive need for one.

Weed is in a similar situation as Connor Wedington was last spring: few offers, rising interest but waiting for the first big offer. Washington offered Wedington during a visit last spring and the window was small for him to have it be committable. Once Stanford and others came around in the fall things got hairy and then the fall out came in December. UW doesn't want that situation again, and if they don't need to create it they likely won't.

2018 three-star Sumner (Wash.) inside linebacker Ben Wilson [uncommitted]:

Wilson was scheduled to visit but did not follow through in making it on campus. He told me he spoke with the coaches and has decided to focus on schools that are making him a priority aka offering.

"I didn't end up going. I had good communication with Coach Gregory and I understand where my recruiting stands with UW. They have shown me respect. Overall, I am trying to build relationships with the programs that have identified me in their future possibilities."

With Washington already having 2018 3-star LB Jackson Sirmon committed in the class of 2018, and Wilson and Sirmon playing almost identical styles, I don't see Washington offering Wilson unless a spot opens up. Wilson has blown up with offers from TCU, Vanderbilt and others to name a few, and I think it's going to be either party doing what's best for their situation.

2018 three-star Seattle (Wash.) Garfield athlete Tre'Shaun Harrison [uncommitted]:

Harrison is another prospect that's intriguing with the in-state group for 2018. He's also playing basketball for Garfield and as a result he was unable to make his visit to UW this weekend. Washington was his first major offer and others have joined since including Michigan, Oregon and UCLA among others.

Washington wants Harrison on defense and again the common thread will be who do the coaches want in this class. UW has Kyler Gordon, Isaac Taylor-Stuart, Julius Irvin, and Aashari Crosswell in the class already offered and holding high interest. Harrison is high on the Huskies so he could choose this spring to commit to Washington and save his spot, or it could become a waiting game.

Overall thoughts from in-state 2018 prospects:

I don't think many who haven't received an offer will get one from Washington in this class due to the numbers. But from the top end Washington has already landed the No.1 in-state prospect in QB Jacob Sirmon, with fellow top in-state prospects Kyler Gordon, Devin Culp and Tre'Shaun Harrison all holding high interest.

As things stand I believe it's Devin Culp vs Jake Peters for the 2018 TE spot with the first to jump getting the slot. Even with several national schools offering I firmly believe Gordon will end up at Washington and that could happen this spring, but that might be too early for the four-star prospect. If Washington does offer more in-state prospects like Mason Starling (3-star WR) or others it would be in the spring or summer.

Quick Note on 2018 Rivals100 Visitor This Weekend...

2018 four-star Murrieta (Calif.) Murrieta Valley wide receiver Melquise Spiker is on campus Saturday and Sunday for an unofficial visit and while there is a chance he could commit at the end of his visit, the expectation is once Washington announces its new wide receivers coach Spiker will pull the trigger and commit to UW.

Washington already has 2018 four-star Austin Osborne committed and secured. Spiker is the No.95 overall prospect in the class of 2018 with Osborne the No. 198 overall prospect in the country. Washington will take three receivers in the class with four-star Michael Wilson, and five-star Amon-Ra St. Brown among others still holding offers with high interest.

Introduction...

Hello everyone,

My name is Lars Hanson and I've taken over as publisher of The Dawg Report. I wanted to take this moment to give all of you guys a little background into my work that got me to join Rivals as a publisher...

I began my journalism career working for a handful of sports blogs and websites from 2009-2013 before being hired on by Realdawg.com to cover UW athletics and recruiting. Over the course of the past three years I've established a strong foothold on Washington athletics and coverage of football recruiting, with basketball coverage coming along more recently.

The reason I accepted this position is because it's my goal to make this site fun, interactive and informative for everyone involved. I want everyone who posts on the subscription forums to feel they are being heard and feel comfortable knowing they can post without feeling squished by others. Everyone here will have a voice and be heard.

I look forward to answering your team and recruiting coverage as the weeks and months go by and Go Dawgs!

10. Washington

After a run to the College Football Playoff, it’s not surprising to see an uptick in talent on the recruiting trail. Bynum was one of California’s best overall prospects and a player Washington fans are hoping has an instant impact. Joining him in the class is high three-star prospects Cook and Jones, the type of players that Chris Petersen and his staff have turned into stars over the past 10-plus years.
