I'm considering taking the trip up to watch the Opener VS Rutgers. Any recos on where to stay? How is the atmosphere for gameday? Areas to avoid?

Try the Edgewater. Great view and food. Anything downtown and Montlake is pretty safe. Washington has the 'Zone' for food, drinks, big screen TV... booze, etc.. with the tailgating atmosphere.
