Week 10 Review

It was a hard fought game for the Huskies yesterday as they lost 34-23 to the #12 Utah Utes at home. Here are the players I believe deserve player of the game honors:

Offense:
Jake Browning
23-39 257 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Browning looked great for a large portion of the afternoon. Although the team didn't admit it after the game, the weather definitely played a big factor in Washington's demise. Although Browning was only able to accrue 12 yards on the ground, his ability to make plays outside of the pocket took another step forward this week as he deciphered the defense and made the correct decision on whether to pass or run, especially on third down. Browning isn't a finished product quite yet, but he was the best the Huskies offense had to offer on Saturday.

Defense:
Taniela Tupou
6 tackles, 2 TFL and a Forced Fumble

Taniela was one of a few Huskies to consistently make plays on the defensive side. He forced a fumble by Utah's star running back Devontae Booker and although the Huskies didn't capitalize on the opportunity, Taniela put the Huskies in a prime position to take the lead after Keishawn Bierria recovered the fumble at the 50 while the Huskies were only down by 4.

Special Teams:
Chico McClatcher
5 kick returns for 91 yards

Chico had two plays in the return game that eventually led to Washington's two touchdowns of the night. Kicker Cameron Van Winkle also had a great night, but it's nice to give some love to other less appreciated special teamers.

Weekly Review: Week 9

With a huge 49-3 victory over the University of Arizona. Here are the guys I believe earned player of the week honors for Washington:

Offense: Jake Browning (QB)
This was a huge exhale game for Husky fans, as well as for Browning. His 5 touchdown performance should be a huge confidence boost for a guy that had one touchdown since September 19th heading into this game. It was great to see Browning back from his shoulder injury and having great success. Browning looked great running the ball and it is a nice step forward for this offense that has been struggling to put points on the board.

Defense: Travis Feeney (LB)
Feeney has been a monster in the backfield all season long and Halloween was the perfect opportunity for him to unleash the beast. Feeney finished the game with 11 tackles, 2 sacks, 4.5 tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles. I will be shocked if this kid doesn't receive his second defensive Pac-12 player of the week this season. He earned it.

Special Teams: Cameron Van Winkle (K)
Van Winkle tied his career high for extra point field goals made (7). He has been perfect from the field since the USC game on October 8th and he is a big reason that the Huskies are able to keep their playbook open on third and fourth down within his field goal range.

What are your thoughts on the players of the week?

Weekly Review: Week 7

Offensively: Myles Gaskin rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries against the Stanford Cardinal. Aside from Gaskin, I think the rest of the offense was a wash this week. K.J. Carta-Samuels won't see the field while Jake Browning is healthy and Carta-Samuels wasn't able to spread the ball around enough to give a fair grade to anybody else on this offense.

Defensively: It was nice to see Budda Baker finally get his first interception of the season. Unfortunately, the defense didn't look great against Stanford. They appeared to be gassed and didn't display the dominance they have shown in previous weeks. Now that they face they face adversity, it will be interesting to see how the team responds.

Special Teams: Korey Durkee, the punter. Without his booming kicks, Washington would have given up a lot more than 31 points.

Who are your players of the week?

Weekend Review

Offensively: The team was back to their old ways. Couldn't convert on third downs, stagnant run game for a large portion of the game and Browning over or underthrowing passes that would be large chunk gains.

It wasn't all bad from the offense. I really liked Browning being able to keep his eyes down the field when he felt pressure in the pocket. He would get flushed out of the pocket, but he wouldn't panic. He kept moving in the right direction, kept his eyes down field and made great decisions to either run or dump pass on many occasions all night.

Myles Gaskin is another bright spot in the lineup. If he and Dwayne Washington can co-exist in the backfield, they are going to be a dangerous duo. Gaskin has a tremendous ability for hitting the right hole and finding a seam for huge gains. Next year with his big play ability in the run game combined with John Ross's speed in the special teams and receiving game, there is some scary speed on this offense.

Washington is a decent runner, but is a more serious threat in the passing game, in my opinion.

With the running back platoon philosophy a lot of teams have adopted, Gaskin and Washington will be dangerous if they can both get going on the same day.

Defensively: Played better than the final score indicated. The secondary took a lot of flack for allowing Vernon Adams to have the game that he did. But a lot of that was just the pure athleticism and talent that Adams possesses. Vernon made a lot of his big plays on broken third down plays. The Huskies did a great job to collapse the pocket and Adams was able to get into the open and eventually find guys who were able to get open.

Overall: This is a really special team in the making. With more experience, this team could easily be undefeated. They have been in every game they have played, so far, and they have yet to lose by more than six points on any occasion.

This is a team that just knows how to stick around late into games and as soon as they turn the corner and turn those almost wins into victories, the future looks bright for this young team.

What are your thoughts?

Gameday Thread - Oregon

This could be the year that Washington finally beats UW.

I think if Vernon Adams doesn't play and Devon Allen's explosiveness continues to elude him, UW has a great chance of beating Oregon.

But, if Adams is ready to go and Allen has even the slightest bit of his explosiveness back after his knee injury in the Rose Bowl, I think Oregon wins a close one.

Although UW has made tremendous strides and their defense is one of the best in the country, in my opinion. The fire power that the Oregon offense has with Royce Freemen in the backfield and the ability of Vernon Adams to create on the ground, as well as through the air, is just too much for this young defense.

The Huskies offense is really going to have to prove to us that they can run with some of the better teams in the Pac-12. Because if it wasn't for Sidney Jones Providing the Huskies with a huge momentum swing, as well as putting them in great field position to run the Hall to Perkins trick play, the outcome at USC could have been drastically different.

These are just my thoughts. What do you think?

Ryan Kelley

Four-star quarterback Ryan Kelley from Chandler (Ariz.) Basha tells me Washington stopped by to check him out in a game a couple weeks back. He is one of the top available 2017 prospects in the West region, but the Huskies probably have some ground to make up on a a couple Pac-12 programs.

Weekly Wrap-Up

This segment I would like to discuss how you all think the team performed this week.

Defensively, I love what I'm seeing. The secondary held Cody Kessler, the most efficient Pac-12 QB going into this game, to 156 yards passing, 2 interceptions and was sacked 5 times at home.

Credit also goes to the front seven, Azeem Victor set the tone with a huge sack on the first play from scrimmage and that energized the team to carry them to a victory.

The offense, aside from Myles Gaskin, didn't look great. Browning struggled to get anything going. Although, Jaydon Mickens was big on third down all night long.

The trick play from Marvin Hall to Joshua Perkins was definitely the play of the game. But, I believe the Huskies defense is the real MVP for the week.

What are your thoughts on the win from this young team in L.A.? A place that many of these kids are from.
