Defensive Analysis

Here are the current newest additions to Death Row:

DB/LB: Brandon Wellington (Pending) ****
DB: Isaiah Gilchrist ****
DB: Byron Murphy ****
DB: Kentrell Love ****
DB: Taylor Rapp ***
DB: Kamari Pleasant **
LB: Camilo Eifler ****
DE: Levi Onwuzurike ****
DE: Amandre Williams ***
DE: Myles Rice **

The Huskies defensive recruiting deserves a standing ovation. They have added a ton of talented to an already outstanding returning class.

With the departures of Taniela Tupou (DT), Travis Feeney (DE), Cory Littleton (ILB), Brian Clay (S), who do you think can step in and fill the huge voids that these players are leaving behind?

Personally, although Byron Murphy is receiving the most hype in the secondary. I'm excited to see how Kentrell Love transitions to the college game.

Love is 6'2" and having Kevin King at 6'3" on the other side, the Huskies look scary good in the secondary.

Who are you excited to see?

Offensive Analysis

Today the Huskies added:

OL: Luke Wattenberg ****
OL: Nick Harris **
QB: Daniel Bridge-Gadd ***
RB: Sean McGrew ****
WR: Jordan Chin ***
WR: Aaron Fuller **
TE: Jacob Kizer ***

With the departures of the Huskies starting C (Siosifa Tufunga) , TE (Joshua Perkins) and WR (Jaydon Mickens), how do you anticipate the transition for these new dawgs to the 2016 team?

Will McGrew be able to coincide with Myles Gaskin in the backfield?

Daniel Bridge-Gadd

6'3" 205 lbs quarterback Daniel Bridge-Gadd has committed to being a Washington Husky this morning. Last year he completed 251 of 374 passes (67%) threw for 4,268 yards, 47 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Breaking numerous school records on the way, Bridge-Gadd took his team to the state final for the first time in history and was subsequently named Arizona player of the year.

What do you think of his addition to the team and do you believe he could potentially push Jake Browning from the starting role at any point in his career?

Death Row Adds One

Keith Taylor, class of 2017 4-star recruit out of Anaheim, California has committed to being a future Washington Husky, joining the self-proclaimed Death Row Bandits (Husky Secondary). Seemingly adding another corner back to an already great unit.

With the same guys returning in the secondary next year, and the addition of Bellevue’s Isaiah Gilchrist, Corona’s Kentrell Love and Bellingham’s Taylor Rapp. How strong do you see this secondary getting if everyone stays for all four years?

Malloe Returns

Former Washington Husky Ikaika Malloe will take over as the defensive line coach for the Huskies next season.

Malloe was previously in the same role at Utah State and looks to bring new life to the Huskies front four.

Utah State was ranked 25th worst team in all of college football this past season, allowing 26 rushing touchdowns. This team went 6-7 and lost their bowl game 21-23 to Akron.

While I don't believe it is entirely Malloe's fault that they Aggies struggled on the defensive front. I also don't see how ending the season on a sour note could possibly be a huge boost of confidence for the future of the Huskies defensive line.

What are your thoughts?

Player of the Week: Dec. 14-20

Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of the real player of the week. Kelsey Plum, the leading scorer in the nation, led the Huskies to another victory and deserves to be the main picture.

Nevertheless, here are the players of the week:

Kelsey Plum
W, 78-43 versus UC Riverside
27 points, 10/20 FG, 3/7 3-PT FG, 3 Rebs, 4 Assists

Dejounte Murray
L, 83-97 versus Oakland
16 points, 6/15 FG, 2/6 3-PT FG, 4 Rebs, 7 Assists

Any predictions on who will be this weeks players of the week?

For the men's team, they play Seattle U.

The women play Weber State.

2016 Schedule

The Pac-12 recently released the 2016 football schedule and this is what the Huskies have in store for next season:

September 3 Rutgers

September 10 Idaho

September 17 Portland State

September 24 @Arizona

October 8 @Oregon

October 15 Bye

October 22 Oregon State (HOMECOMING)

October 29 @ Utah

November 5 @California

November 12 USC

November 19 Arizona State

November 25 @Washington State (Apple Cup)

December 2 Pac-12 Championship Game

The two games I really like are October 8th @ Oregon and November 12th versus USC.

Oregon will be a nice revenge game, because who knows what would have happened if Browning was able to go on that final drive here in Seattle against them this season. And USC because they are always tough and have been the juggernaut of this conference for a long time.

Which games are you looking forward to?

New Coaching Roles

Interim wide receivers coach Bush Hamdan has been named the wide receiver coach and pass game coordinator for the foreseeable future.

DB coach Jimmy Lake has been named the new Co-Defensive Coordinator.

Assistant Head Coach and Linebackers Coach, Bob Gregory has added Special Teams Coordinator to his resume.

What is your take on the coaches and their new roles?

Specifically, I really like Lake being named co-defensive coordinator. He controls the secondary, arguably the heart of the Huskies defense and will now take on the duty of getting the unit to gel with Pete Kwiatowski and his expertise with the front seven.

Players of the Week: Dec. 7-13

Both the men's and women's basketball team went undefeated this week. Let's take a look at who performed the best for the Huskies this week:

Men's Basketball

Andrew Andrews
22 PPG, 57% FG, 70% 3-PT FG, 2.5 RPG, 3.5 APG, 2.0 SPG
Beat TCU at home (92-67)
Beat Montana at home (92-62)

Women's Basketball

Talia Walton
29 points, 10/16 from the field, 6-9 from three, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks and a steal
Won @ South Dakota (77-64)

Pac-12 All-Conference Team

Here is a list of the Washington Huskies that received all-conference honors this season:

DB Budda Baker - 1st team
DB Sidney Jones IV - 1st team
DL Taniela Tupou - 2nd team
LB Travis Feeney - 2nd team

Honorable mentions
DL Greg Gaines
RB Myles Gaskin
DB Kevin King
LB Cory Littleton
TE Joshua Perkins
LB Azeem Victor

Any thoughts on the list? Should victor have made a higher team? Does Keishawn Bierria deserve acknowledgement? Darren Gardenhire?

Jeff Choate Leaving Huskies

Montana State University named Huskies defensive line coach and special teams coordinator as their new Head Coach.

That's the second coaching change in two days for the Dawgs.

What are your thoughts of the play of the Huskies defensive line/special teams under Choate and what would you like to see remain the same or change with the new coach(es)?

Week 13 Players of the Week

Offense
Myles Gaskin
32 carries 138 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns

Myles became the first true freshman to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season for the Huskies and his dominance was on display against the Washington State Cougars. Chris Petersen has continually praised Myles for his ball security skills and he has yet to fumble this season (knock on wood). This is going to be a special guy for years to come and the Huskies look like they have a good running back for the future.

Defense
Entire Defense
5 Forced Fumbles, 8 passes broken up, 3 sacks, 7 tackles for loss and 2 interceptions
Honorable Mention - Sidney Jones IV

This unit put up video games numbers against their inner state rival in a game that decided if the Huskies would be bowl eligible or not. The whole team answered the call and appeared to be more focused than they've ever been this season.

Sidney Jones IV's 69-yard pick six took all the air out of the Cougars. It shifted the momentum heavily back in the favor of the Huskies and at the time, the Cougars only trailed by 14 in the beginning of the second half. The Cougars were putting together a nice drive when Jones IV took an errant pass back to the house and the Cougars began to fall apart thereafter.

Special Teams
Darrell Daniels/Chico McClatcher

Missed field goals and conservative kickoff and punts by both sides made it difficult to select a special teams MVP for the week. Darrell Daniels made a few plays on kickoffs, tackling the return man and preventing big plays on two seperate occasions. Chico McClatcher didn't make any spectacular plays on special teams. Although, he has been the go-to-guy and homerun threat for the Huskies all season on special teams. He opened up the scoring for the Huskies with a 26-yard rushing touchdown in the 1st quarter and even made the tackle on the ensuing kickoff.

Week 12 Players of the Week

Offense:
Jake Browning
18/20 211 passing yards and 4 touchdowns

Jake was well on his way to a great game against Arizona State, until the four turnovers late in the game. Those decisions really negated any stats he accumulated on the night. It was great to see Jake have statistically solid games back to back and should give Jake and Husky fans confidence with him behind the helm in the future.

Defense:
Team Effort
Honorable Mention: Azeem Victor

Holding any team to 0 points in a half and 7 points in the game is a whole team effort. With that being said, Azeem victor squaring up Nick Mitchell and forcing the fumble was rather impressive.

Special Teams:
Dante Pettis/Chico McClatcher

These two players explosive plays got everything started in the first quarter for the Huskies. They were the biggest factor, in my opinion, that led to Oregon State conceding defeat early. Both played pivotal roles in the Huskies scoring on each of the first three drives:

McClatcher 56 yard return on first play of the game

Pettis keeps 2nd drive alive with 14 yard grab on third down, McClatcher caps off drive with 2 yard TD run

Pettis takes punt on third drive 89 yards to the house.

Love offered by USC...

Washington commit Kentrell Love, a three-star DB from Corona (Calif.) Centennial, has been offered by USC. He said he's definitely going to take a closer look at the Trojans but right now he's staying committed to the Huskies and only taking a visit to UW.

That being said, he told me his parents "want him to take a closer look at SC" and that he's going to consider the Trojans as his recruitment continues. The way I understand it, once a coach is hired and all that is settled, Love will really take a look at both programs closer.
